I’m dismayed that the Supreme Court interprets a statement written 200 years ago about the right to bear arms to support a well regulated Militia as one that allows citizens in a city with 428 homicides YTD and 12,600 residents/sq mi to own handguns. No matter how you slice it, the truth remains: less restrictive handgun laws in urban areas make violent crime rates worse. You may sleep better at night with a pistol under your pillow, but the same law that affords you that comfort makes it easier for gangs and thugs to acquire guns. I guarantee that the harm done when kids and well-meaning residents in struggling neighborhoods get killed by stray bullets is not outweighed by the warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you’re tucked in at night, swaddled by the protections of a Constitution that was written before the age of modern cities, drug war, or crime.
